The Sibelius 7 Sounds User Guide wasn’t included with my original installation of Sibelius 7.0, but I would have found it very useful. It provides a complete list of all of the instruments and sounds included with Sibelius 7 as well as details of how to trigger all of the different playing techniques contained in the library.
While the main Sibelius Reference Guide contains some of the same material contained in this resource, if you are trying to get the best results from the Sound Library, you’ll probably want to check this out first. The Sounds User Guide provides informative graphics and illustrations to help you understand Sibelius Sound Library parameters such as ranges and sound IDs:

To help you get started, Avid has also posted a companion example Sibelius 7 score that has every instrument in the Sibelius 7 Sounds library already configured. (The User Guide has instructions starting on page 11).

The Sibelius 7 Sounds User Guide is written by Hugh Smith of The Write Score, providers of documentation and templates for a variety of sound libraries to help you get the most out of your notation software.
The sound library included with Sibelius 7 contains 550 separate instruments and playing techniques, and hundreds of unpitched percussion sounds.

Thank you for your insights into these programs. This is a great service to us all.

I’m very interested in reading this information but when I download the config file (S7S_Library_7.1.2) all I get is 8 empty bars, and when I try the user guide it stalls
and won’t download or activate the reader.
Hi Art,
The config file doesn’t have an actual score in it – it’s just raw material for building your sound set.
Open the Config file, and Export it as a House Style. Now, open a score you want to work in, and import the House Style, selecting the Playback Dictionary and Instrument Definitions options.
As far as the download stalling, another reader reported a similar issue. The solution for him seemed to be that if you right click on the image link, you can specify that you want to download the linked file rather than opening it directly in the browser. Hope that helps!

Hi Robert,
I know maybe it’s not the right place, but i think you can help me with something I can’t figure it out. I am creating my full template in sibelius, with vst not the Sibelius sound. The problem is: I don’t find the oboe staccato in the Sounds ID. There is only (wind.oboes.oboe). Usually I need 3-4 articulation for each instrument (normal, staccato, pizzicato and portato). Is there any way to create that sound Id???
Hi Gerti,
Hugh Smith, the author of the Sibelius Sounds User Guide is probably the most knowledgable person on this subject currently. His website has a lot of great tutorials and resources that may help you with your specific library.
